Genetic Traits On The Boot

The communities of Grand Bank and Fortune, approximately five kilometers apart, are located on the Southernmost end of the Burin Peninsula (commonly referred to as “the Boot”) in Newfoundland, Canada.

Primarily fishing communities, the communities were settled in the early 1600's and due to the geographical isolation of both communities, the populations were quite small. Reached only by boat, or for the adventurous type, days of hiking through the barren bogs of the Burin Peninsula, there was a small influx of people to the areas.

Despite this, communities grew in size and families were started among the small populations of our towns and it was in this way that traits, both favorable and unfavorable, were passed on.

By conducting a school-wide survey, we have found evidence of uncommon genetic situations where recessive conditions show greater frequency of occurrence than the dominant conditions.
